Ottawa porcelain veneers provider Dr. Pamela Li is celebrating National Children's Dental Health Month by helping parents brush up on tips for caring for children's teeth.

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, which is the perfect time for parents to help kids brush up on good oral hygiene.

Dr Pamela Li, an Ottawa porcelain veneers professional, offers some tips for parents to help get their children on the right track:

As soon as the child has erupted molars, parents should begin flossing, which is usually around age 2.

Get your child used to having his/her mouth cleaned out by wiping the gums with a damp cloth after feeding. Once the first tooth comes in, use a soft bristled brush with water, not toothpaste, and brush behind the tooth and around the gum line.

After age 2 introduce toothpaste to the child, but only if it is non-fluoridated toothpaste. You may switch to fluoridated toothpaste when the child is capable of spitting out reliably, typically around age 4.

Don’t let small toothaches become big problems. Visit the dentist regularly for teeth cleanings and if the parent finds anything abnormal inside the child’s mouth during regular inspection, they should visit the dentist as soon as possible.

“Good oral hygiene starts at home with the eruption of your child’s first tooth,” said orthodontic services provider Dr. Li. “The Canadian Dental Association encourages parents to take their infants to the dentist for an initial assessment within six months of the first tooth coming in or by one year of age.”

By getting the child’s first assessment at one year of age and then visiting the dentist regularly by age two or three, parents can ensure the cleaning they are doing at home is effective and the dentist can identify any problems that need to be addressed.

Once your child’s permanent molars have come in, your dentist will recommend sealing them to protect them from cavities. Sealants are plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth to keep germs and food particles out.

When your child goes for a dental exam, your dentist can see how their teeth are growing and if they will need any orthodontic treatments. All children should be assessed for orthodontic treatment by age seven. Many orthodontic problems may be prevented by early treatment, which encourages growth in the proper direction.

For children interested in participating in athletic sports, Dr. Li recommends parents take their child to their dentist to get fitted for a custom mouth guard to protect them from damaging their teeth, gums and lips.

“People often forget how important a mouth guard is to an athlete,” said Dr. Li. “With today’s technology, guards not only protect the teeth, gums and jaw joints, they can also improve balance, endurance and strength.”

According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, approximately 10 percent of children snore regularly from a condition known as Sleep-Disordered Breathing and 2 to 4 percent of the pediatric population suffers from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (http://www.entnet.org/HealthInformation/Could-Child-Have-Sleep-Apnea.cfm).

The potential consequences of untreated SDB, which is classified as loud snoring caused by enlarged tonsils and adenoids, are social issues, moodiness, inattention during school or at home, and slow growth and development, as they may not be producing enough growth hormone.

“Many cases of SBD are misdiagnosed as ADHD,” said Dr. Li. “Not every child with academic or behavioral issues will have SBD, but if a child snores loudly on a regular basis SBD should be considered.”

A dentist should only be consulted if they are experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea, which Dr. Li is.

“Children shouldn’t be afraid of the dentist, so make the trips fun for them by rewarding them with a fun activity after the appointment,” said the smile makeover provider.

Dr. Pamela Li, an Ottawa, tooth whitening provider, explains the link between bad oral health and its impact on the rest of the body.

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – Every time you visit the dentist your doctor probably nags you about brushing twice a day and flossing daily. While those habits, along with routine cleanings, are key elements to keep your teeth and gums healthy, it has been proven that how well you take care of your mouth could impact your overall health.

“Your mouth is the portal to the rest of your body,” said Dr. Pamela Li, an Ottawa tooth whitening provider. “In fact, some studies suggest there are more bacteria living in your mouth than there are people on the earth. Most of the bacteria are harmless, but if you neglect your oral health the harmful bacteria can quickly multiply and spread.”

Cavities and gum disease may contribute to serious conditions including heart disease, diabetes, respiratory diseases, and premature and low weight babies. Gum disease is an inflammation of the gums, which can also impact the bone supporting the teeth. Plaque is a sticky biofilm of bacteria that builds up, thickens and hardens on the teeth. If it is not removed by daily brushing, it will harden into tartar and infect the gums and bone.

The bacteria in plaque can travel from the mouth and into the bloodstream, attaching to fatty plaques in the coronary arteries and contributing to clot formation. Researchers have also found that people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from heart disease than those without periodontal disease. Additional studies have also shown a correlation between gum disease and stroke based on the number of teeth people have in their mouth.

“The exact relationship between gum disease and heart disease is not clear,” said Dr. Li, who offers dentures, teeth bleaching and dental bridge services at her clinic. “Periodontal disease can be a long-term chronic infection that can increase an overall inflammatory response in the body, which in turn increases the risk of heart disease. People with periodontal disease have an elevated C-reactive protein, which is a marker for cardiac disease.”

As we prepare for American Heart Health Month, which is celebrated for the entire month of February, it is important to understand how many people are affected by heart disease, said Dr. Li. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.

People with diabetes are also more likely to develop periodontal disease than people without diabetes. In fact, gum disease is often considered the sixth complication of diabetes. Severe gum disease can increase blood sugar putting patients at more risk for diabetic complications.

Do not underestimate the importance of visiting the dentist and your general doctor regularly, the cosmetic sedation dentist said. Catching gum disease early is ideal as you can see, since diagnosing it too late can have a devastating impact on your health.

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – Lena Jensen, a Canadian Dental Association accredited dental hygienist, has joined the staff of Dr. Pamela Li, a TMJ dentist in Ottawa.

Lena has been a dental hygienist for three years and graduated with honors from the Canadian National Institute of Health.

“Lena fits in perfectly with our staff,” said the dental crown and sedation dentistry professional Dr. Pamela Li. “She is warm, friendly and very gentle.
“The role of a dental hygienist is like being an apprentice to a dentist as she will work side by side with me on a daily basis,” said the implant dentist. “She will be playing an invaluable role in our clinic.”

Some of her duties include, but are not limited to:

Collecting patient histories

Removing calculus, stains and plaque from tooth surfaces

Completing chards for the dentist on patients

Applying fluoride and sealants

“I am thrilled to work in such a wonderful office,” said Lena. “Everyone has been very welcoming, including the patients, who can sometimes be weary of meeting a new hygienist. I already love it here and I can’t wait to see what the future brings.”

Ottawa cosmetic dentistry professional Dr. Pamela Li advises patients to consider giving themselves the gift of a new smile this holiday season.

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – Ottawa cosmetic dentistry professional Dr. Pamela Li recently announced a great holiday gift idea for people who seem to have everything except the perfect smile. Through Dec. 21, Dr. Li will offer free cosmetic consultations for current and new patients.

The holidays are just around the corner, which means family photos, work parties and social gatherings are soon to follow. Instead of looking for the perfect outfit to wear or the most thoughtful gift to give, consider investing in your smile instead.

“During the holidays, people are reluctant to spend money on themselves,” said Ottawa implants dentist Dr. Li. “But the first thing people notice about you is your smile. If you are ashamed to smile during the most joyful time of the year, a cosmetic procedure is a gift you will never regret giving yourself.”

Cosmetic Options

Porcelain crowns

Porcelain dental veneers

One hour whitening

Porcelain inlays and onlays to replace dark mercury fillings

Bonding to close gaps, reshape teeth, cover stains and repair chips or cracks

Gum re-contouring to remove excess gum tissue

Invisalign

The free consultation will begin with Dr. Li taking a series of digital photos, which she will review with you to determine what it is that you do not like about your smile. The next step is to look through a smile design catalogue that will explain the smile options available. Any signs of TMJ and your bite will be assessed to determine the stability of a cosmetic makeover. Finally, you and Dr. Li will decide on a treatment plan that will give you a gift that you will truly smile about for years to come.

“A beautiful smile is more affordable than ever,” said the TMJ dentist. “And the benefits of having a cosmetic procedure done will last far beyond the holiday season.”

Dr. Pamela Li an Ottawa cosmetic dentist warns patients about holidays foods that could affect their oral health.

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – The holidays are a time to bring together friends and family to celebrate and rejoice the year ahead. The holidays mark the beginning of the fall season, and while many of us may pack up and go on holiday, it doesn’t mean that your teeth should too.

“The first thing that comes to mind when people think about foods that can harm their teeth, they instantly think candy,” said Dr. Pamela Li, a cosmetic dentist who specializes in dental crowns at her dental clinic in Ottawa. “While candy is certainly a culprit, there are many other foods that should be avoided during the holidays.”

When you eat sugary foods or drinks, a naturally present bacteria in the mouth begins to feed on the sugar which produces acids as a result. These acids then cause the enamel to slowly deteriorate, making it weak and more vulnerable to tooth decay and many other problems, including gingivitis.

Teeth are not generally affected by the amount of sugar we consume, instead it is the frequency and duration of the sugars that are in your mouth.

Eating sweet deserts after a meal puts you at much less risk for developing decay than a person who snacks over the course of a day on sweets. The acid attack lasts about 20 minutes after the sugar is consumed. Therefore, if you sip a little bit of juice every 20 minutes, you will have constant acids levels in your mouth

“I recommend flossing and rinsing your mouth with water after eating meals, especially after sweet treats, to help rid the mouth of cavity producing foods,” said Dr. Li, a dentistry professional who offers the Invisalign system. “Brushing your teeth with abrasive toothpaste may cause wear and erosion of your teeth.”

Treating Your Sweet Tooth
Limit your consumption of sticky foods like lollipops, hard candies and dried fruit. Rinse your mouth out with water after drinking juices, pop or wine. Onions, celery, kiwis, parsley and apples are good for your teeth, try to eat holiday recipes that include these items.
Cheese is a great choice as it helps produce saliva, which washes sugar off the teeth and it also contains calcium, which can strengthen them.

“Use common sense and practice good oral hygiene this holiday season and you’re sure to come out cavity free,” said Dr. Li.

Dr. Pamela Li, an Ottawa cosmetic dentist, recently attended an orthodontics mechanics seminar in Toronto.

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – Ottawa cosmetic dentist Dr. Pamela Li recently participated in a seminar in Toronto about the mechanics of various orthodontic techniques. The “Hands-On Mechanics” seminar was taught by Dr. Tarek El-Bialy.

The course described the mechanics of wire bending and tricks to make the teeth move faster and more efficiently. It also discussed new wires that are available that will be gentler on the teeth and more comfortable for the patient.

“Some wires are even heat activated,” notes Dr. Li, a TMJ dentist. “They are cool when placed in the mouth so they are flexible and easy to put in place. Then they warm up in the mouth and become stiffer, placing force on the teeth in order to move them. There are also extra wide wires which help expand the dental arches even more – this particularly helps with crowding issues.”
Dr. El-Bialy, an orthodontist at Imagine Orthodontics in Edmonton, Alberta and a professor on the faculty of medicine and dentistry at the University of Alberta taught the course. Dr. El-Bialy has an M.S. in oral sciences and a Certificate of Specialty in orthodontics from the University of Illinois in Chicago.

“I find it very useful to attend these courses,” explains Dr. Li, a dentist who treats snoring. “There are always new developments in orthodontics and dentistry – ways of treating patients that are faster and better. These seminars are the best way for me to learn about them. It benefits my patients and improves my practice.”

Dr. Pamela Li, from an Ottawa dental clinic, discusses the particular oral health needs of women.

Ottawa, ON – Dr. Pamela Li, an Ottawa dental clinic dentist, points out that women have specific health concerns which can impact their oral health. Because of hormonal shifts throughout their lives, women must be particularly aware of their dental hygiene.

Puberty: “During puberty, the surge in hormones can alter the way that gums react to plaque. Gum tissue can become red, swollen and more prone to bleeding. “All of this is normal,” explains Li, an Ottawa tooth whitening provider. “But girls should be extra meticulous with their oral hygiene to try and prevent the inflammation.”Menstruation: Some women may experience a change in their gums a day or two before their period begins, but the changes go away shortly after menstruation starts.

“The changes in hormones can lead to red, swollen and bleeding gums, swelling in the salivary glands, or canker sores,” says Li, an Ottawa family dentistry expert.

Pregnancy: Pregnancy leaves you more vulnerable to gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease, particularly during your second through eighth month. Be sure to tell your dentist if you’re pregnant,” recommends Li, an Ottawa dental crown dentist.

“If your dentist feels you are at risk for periodontal disease, he or she may advise more frequent professional cleanings in the office. Periodontal disease is a risk factor for low birth weight babies.”

If you need fillings or any other dental treatment, the second trimester is the best time to do any dental work.

Menopause: The hormonal changes precipitated by menopause can sometimes lead to burning mouth syndrome (BMS). BMS is characterized by a tingling or numbness in the mouth, a bitter or metallic taste, or a mouth that is dry and sore. Li, an Ottawa downtown dentist, notes that BMS often starts in the late morning, peaks in the evening and stops at night. Some women experience it constantly, whereas others get it intermittently.

If you experience BMS, your dentist will first rule out other causes such as untreated diabetes, problems with dentures, nutritional deficiencies, depression, or side effects of medications. Treatment includes prescribing medicines to treat dry mouth or control pain from nerve damage. “Patients should try to keep their mouths moist with frequent sips of water, sucking on ice chips, using saliva substitutes or chewing sugarless gum,” recommends Li, an Ottawa TMD dentist. “They should avoid alcohol, tobacco, spicy foods or acidic foods.”

Dr. Pamela Li, an Ottawa cosmrtic dentistry expert, is now offering the Moses device to treat snoring and sleep apnea.

Ottawa, ON – Ottawa cosmetic dentistry expert Dr. Pamela Li now offers the Moses, an oral airway dilator which helps to treat sleep apnea and snoring. The two-part design of the appliance makes it comfortable for patients and allows them to talk, drink, open wide and close their lips.

“There are other products that are designed to prevent sleep apnea,” notes Li, an Ottawa teeth bleaching provider. “However, many of them are uncomfortable and hold the tongue in an awkward position. They do not encourage forward positioning of the tongue.” The problem is that this discomfort reduces patient compliance. And if patients don’t wear the device, it isn’t going to help them. The Moses is so comfortable that patients often forget its presence in their mouths after a few minutes, Li says.

The Moses appliance encourages the lower jaw to stay in a forward position and prevents the tongue’s collapse onto the airway. The appliance’s open anterior design increases the amount of space for the tongue in the mouth and gives the tongue somewhere to go. This encourages the tongue to stay in a forward position where it won’t fall back on the airway. “The appliance’s unique combination of tongue management and mandibular advancement triggers a subconscious desire to keep the tongue in the optimal location,” explains Li, an Ottawa emergency dentist.

Since the appliance elevates the tongue to the hard palate, it also increases nasal air flow. The device also discourages muscle activity during sleep, so it reduces or prevents clenching or grinding.

“My patients see a big difference in how they feel once they start using sleep apnea appliances,” says Li, an Ottawa dentist TMD. “They are getting more and better quality sleep. And as a result, they feel better during the day. They come back and tell me how much more energetic and well-rested they feel.”

Each Moses device is custom-made for the patient’s mouth. Li, an Ottawa laser dentistry provider, will specify how much the lower jaw should open and come forward. When the appliance is made in the lab, it is pre-set to those specifications, explains Li, who practices cosmetic dentistry. Ottawa, ON and Canada as a whole have no lab for making the device, so we have ours made in Washington state. Each appliance is also adjustable.

Ottawa, ON – Dr. Pamela Li is now offering Joint Vibration Analysis through her Ottawa dental practice. JVA is a product of BioResearch Associates, Inc. and is used to evaluate the functioning of the Temporal Mandibular Joint- or TMJ.

JVA is a fast, non-invasive method for evaluating TMJ function and is a valuable tool for dentists in investigating TMJ disorders. The JVA equipment consists of a simple pair of pressure sensors that the dentist places over the TMJ to record vibrations as the jaw moves. The JVA records vibration, amplitude, and frequency; it also shows exactly where in the opening/closing cycle the vibration occurs. Different TMJ disorders produce different patterns of vibration. Analyzing these patterns allows a dentist to diagnose a patient’s specific disorder.

“It’s an incredibly valuable tool,” explains Li, an Ottawa general dentist. “It takes the guesswork out of treating TMJ disorders. We can pinpoint exactly where in the joint the disorder occurs – and devise a treatment accordingly.”

All joints on the human body have surfaces that rub together when they move. When a surface is smooth and well lubricated, it creates little friction or vibration. But changes in the surface can be caused by age, degeneration, tears, or displacements. Then the surfaces become rough and create friction when the joint moves. “The friction creates small vibrations that, if detected, can be used to diagnose the problem,” explains the Ottawa Teeth cleaning provider.

At Li’s Ottawa cosmetic dentist , the JVA process only takes about 10 seconds of the patient’s time and results are ready for the dentist to examine within 10 minutes. It can also be used to evaluate a patient’s jaw function prior to starting orthodontics – and can help the dentist design the braces.

“In the past, you needed to use a stethoscope or finger tips to record and analyze the functioning of the jaw,” notes Li, an Ottawa family dentistry practitioner. “This method is more accurate and far more objective. When we can locate the precise source of the problem, it’s possible to devise a treatment that is tailored precisely to the patient’s situation.”

Dr. Pamela Li's Ottawa dental clinic is offering its patients new implant denture technology.

Ottawa, ON – Dr. Pamela Li’s Ottawa dental clinic has been using a new system to provide dentures for their patients. The implant supported dentures have revolutionized how dentists think of and provide dentures.

The locator system by Nobel Biocare allows dentures to be anchored right in the mouth with dental implants embedded right into the jaw. Patients don’t need to fuss with denture adhesives or dentures that feel loose. The implant system allows for more natural feeling teeth, especially in the lower jaw. Many patients have trouble getting used to complete dentures in the lower jaw. However, the new system places two or four implants in the jaw – where they act like tooth roots, making a patient’s denture feel more comfortable. “My patients are happiest with four – rather than two – implants,” explains Li, an Ottawa cosmetic dentistry provider. “But that is a more expensive proposition.”

With the Nobel Biocare system, the locator attachments can be placed directly on the implants or on a bar that is custom-made to fit the implants. “The bar can feel bulkier for patients, but it is stronger in high risk situations. For instance, a large man with a strong bite or a patient with poor quality bones would benefit from the inclusion of a bar,” explains Li, an Ottawa teeth cleaning provider.

The locators are adjustable because they use different-colored nylon rings. Each colored ring can handle a different amount of pounds of pressure, depending on how much retention is needed. This system allows the retention to be adjustable. So, for patients who are looking to find a dentist in Ottawa , Li is the one with the denture experience. “My patients have been very happy with the results,” notes Li, an Ottawa smile makeover provider. “They find that their dentures feel natural and secure. And, they can eat any food they want!”
