Dr. Pamela Li, an Ottawa ON porcelain veneers provider, describes the treatments for gum disease and the problems with leaving it untreated.

Ottawa ON – Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, constitutes a bacterial infection of the gums, ligaments and bone that surround your teeth and hold them in your jaw. Usually painless until its final stages, gum disease is silent like heart disease — and can fool a patient.

“Prevention and treatment of periodontal disease are essential since they are part of a chronic inflammation in your body’s tissues,” observes Ottawa dental specialist, Dr. Pamela Li. “However, people often don’t see it as a serious concern. They see regular dental appointments as ‘just another cleaning.’”Increasingly, experts are studying how periodontal disease interacts with other conditions, and the results are sobering.

Diabetes: Diabetics are more likely to get infections, such as gum infections.

Smoking: Smoking raises your risk of getting gum disease – and reduces the likelihood of a successful treatment.

Heart Disease: Patients with uncontrolled gum disease have greater chances of contracting heart disease. Bacteria in your mouth can go all over your body – including to your heart.

Strokes: Gum disease is one factor that increases your risk of a stroke.

Pregnancy: Periodontal disease increases a woman’s chance of delivering low-birth-weight or premature babies.

COPD: Some researchers think oral bacteria can be aspirated into the lungs, leading to pneumonia – and cause or worsen chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

“Our practice provides conservative periodontal treatment, including cleanings, laser periodontal therapy and Arestin,” explains Dr. Li, an Ottawa tooth whitening provider. Arestin is an antibiotic that destroys the bacteria hiding in periodontal pockets. After a dentist treats you with Arestin, it removes bacteria for as long as 21 days.

Lasers are also successful at treating periodontal disease since they can solve the problem very precisely without bleeding, discomfort, scarring, or a long recovery period.

Our Dr. Pamela Li, an Ottawa, ON dentist, explains the benefits of sedation dentistry.

Ottawa, ON – Many adults – up to 30% — experience anxiety about visiting the dentist and would prefer putting up with pain rather than schedule an appointment. However, Dr. Pamela Li, an Ottawa dental specialist, notes that patients can be treated by sedation dentistry – also called oral sedation dentistry, oral conscious sedation, relaxation dentistry, or – less accurately – sleep dentistry.

From cleanings and root canals to complete smile makeovers, we can employ sedation for a wide range of treatments. During your first appointment at our Ottawa ON dental clinic, you will work with us to select the treatment. We will then give you a prescription for a drug such as Valium, Ativan, or Triazolam.

Dr. Li, an Ottawa cosmetic dentistry provider, has gotten expert training in oral sedation from the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS), the biggest oral sedation dentistry continuing education company in North America. She also received certification in sedation from the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario.

“We make the patient comfortable with a memory foam chair pad,” explains Dr. Li, an Ottawa dentistry expert. “You wouldn’t believe how relaxed a previously fearful patient can become. It’s as simple as taking some pills and they feel much better.”

You will take your prescription before arriving at our office. A companion will need to drive you to and from your appointment. As the treatment begins, you will become relaxed and maybe sleepy – but most people don’t sleep deeply.

“Although we can’t eliminate fear completely, you’ll experience the treatment in a more relaxed and comfortable way,” says Li, an Ottawa dental implants provider. We will measure you using a pulse oximeter blood pressure monitor. The dentist must be ready – although emergencies are extremely unusual.

When the patient is relaxed, we don’t need many appointments but can get more done in one long visit. Many prescriptions can cause amnesia. “The biggest benefit for most people is that they won’t recall anything,” says Dr. Li, an Ottawa dentist. “You’ll have little or no memory of the treatment. The following day you’ll feel like yourself again – with a newer, more a beautiful smile.”

Ottawa ON general dentist, Dr. Pamela Li, has started a protocol recommended by the Canadian Dental Association in which she sees babies at age one to screen for decay risks and educate the parents.

Ottawa, ON – Dr. Pamela Li, an Ottawa dentist and dental implants provider and veneers is implementing a new protocol based on recommendations by the Canadian Dental Association (CDA). The CDA advises that dentists see infants by age one for their first dental visit instead of waiting until age two or three. Early childhood dental decay is still very common and Dr. Li uses the CAMBRA risk assessment screening method to assess each child’s risk.

“The waiting list for dental treatment in an O.R. at CHEO, our children’s hospital, is over a year,” says Dr. Li, an Ottawa invisalign provider and general dental care. “Unfortunately, decay is still prevalent in children despite water fluoridation.”

Much of this early childhood appointment is spent educating the parents. “I explain that early decay looks like white or brown patches,” says Dr. Li, an Ottawa general dentist. “I point out any plaque and explain how to brush the teeth. I discuss risks and benefits of fluoride.”

Strep. mutans, the bacteria that causes decay, is not intrinsic to the human body. It has to be acquired. A child’s caregivers should not share utensils or cups with the infant so the baby will not get strep. mutans in his or her mouth. Theoretically, if a child never gets strep. mutans, then he or she will never get a cavity.

“I try to make the appointment fun for the baby,” says Dr. Li, an Ottawa cosmetic dentist. “They go for a ride in the dental chair – and they get a toothbrush and a toy during the visit. I also give the parents literature about caring for their children’s teeth.”

During oral health month, Ottawa dentist Dr. Pamela Li looks to help patients understand the oral cancer and provide screenings for anyone at risk.

Throughout April, Ottawa dentist Dr. Pamela Li looks to help anyone interested in learning more about oral cancer and provide oral cancer screenings for those who feel like they are in danger of having this illness. Though Dr. Li always looks to help her patients in any way she can, being that April is oral health month, the Ottawa dentistry practitioner hopes to help her patients catch oral cancer early on and improve prognosis.

According to the Canadian Dental Association, every year approximately 3,200 Canadians are diagnosed with oral cancer and 1,050 deaths from oral cancer occur. This terrible disease has a low survival rate because it is often diagnosed very late. Survival rate is greatly improved with early detection. It is important to see a dentist regularly for a check up and oral cancer screening.

“The signs and symptoms of oral cancer in the early stages are minimal. It can be painless and there may not be any obvious physical changes,” says the Ottawa general dentist. “Sometimes there are white or red patches in the mouth or a small ulcerated area like a canker sore. Regular screenings are important and the best way to verify cancer is with a biopsy.”

Dr. Li has worked at the Ottawa Hospital, Civic Campus and other hospitals as well. She has seen first-hand the effects of oral cancer and how it permanently alters a patient’s quality of life.

“Historically, adult male smokers over 50 are at the most risk for oral cancer, but studies have shown that this cancer is finding its way to younger demographics,” says Dr. Li, an Ottawa cosmetic dentistry practitioner. “Possible reasons are the increase use of smokeless tobacco and HPV (human papilloma virus). HPV is also linked to cervical cancer and is sexually transmitted. Young people should be aware of this risk.”

Dr. Pamela Li provides many restorative, preventative, and cosmetic dental procedures for all family members. The Ottawa dental care provider treats patients in need of cleanings, veneers, dental implants, fillings, crowns, whitening, bonding, dentures, bridges, periodontal therapy, Invisalign, early orthodontics, and special services such as the PPM sports mouth guard, sleep apnea treatment, and TMJ treatment.

Dr. Li worked at Moose Factory General Hospital on the Moose Factory Indian Reservation in Northern Ontario. She travelled up to Kasheshewan reservation monthly to service the needs of the remote aboriginal communities.

In 1994, Dr. Li returned to Ottawa, her hometown, to go into private practice. She has been practicing downtown since 1997 and has recently moved to her present location in August 2008.
She has attended the prestigious Las Vegas Institute (LVI) and has completed comprehensive post-doctoral courses in neuromuscular dentistry and cosmetic dentistry. She is certified in oral conscious sedation with the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS).
Sports mouthguards are no longer just keeping athletes from losing their teeth. Thanks to scientifically crafted mouthguards, athletes are benefiting from real improvements to their game.

OTTAWA — When people think of sports and athletic performance, most people think of strength, speed, and even intelligence as key components to winning out the competition. But, many of the world’s top athletes look to an unlikely piece of equipment for a competitive edge: the mouthpiece.
Before the invention of the Pure Power Mouthguard (PPM), the mouthpiece was primarily used to protect athletes from cracking or chipping teeth, biting the tongue, and concussions. Now, with PPM technology, certified dentists are providing customized mouthguards for athletes that provide many bonuses when training and competing.
“At first, considering a mouthguard as a game-changing piece of equipment might seem farfetched,” says Dr. Pamela Li, a PPM certified Ottawa dentist. “But, if you think about it, the mouth is one of two airways that feed oxygen to the body’s muscles and expels carbon-dioxide. Also, the neuromuscular systems are enhanced through the PPM, which enhances many physical aspects of athletic performance.”

Sports including baseball, basketball, football, hockey, martial arts and even golf all have professional athletes that benefit from PPM technology. The PPM helps an athlete by correcting misalignment in the jaw, thus improving two main factors: the body’s airways and the neuromuscular makeup of the athlete. By aligning the jaw in its optimal position, PPM users experience real boosts to strength, concentration, agility, flexibility, balance, and other performance factors as well.

Airways
Whether it be a contact or non-contact sport, PPM provides benefits by increasing oxygen intake during physical activity. Compared to other mouthpieces that only provide protection to the teeth and tongue, PPM’s design opens up airways, which improves oxygenation of the body. Improved delivery of oxygen to the body’s muscles increases endurance.
There are generally two different types of PPM appliances for either contact or non-contact sports. For athletes involved in high impact sports, there is an upper mouthguard that aligns the jaws and opens the airways and protects the teeth as well. For non-contact sports such as golf, the PPM appliance is worn on the bottom jaw and is more discrete and comfortable.
“The PPM provides a much larger advantage in performance than you’d expect,” says Dr. Li, an Ottawa cosmetic dentist. “PPM equipment is used by some major athletes such as Shaquille O’Neil, Terrell Owens, and Olympians Bode Miller and Apollo Ono. All of these professional athletes experience a boost from PPM that is not steroids and is100% legal.”

Neuromuscular
Muscles in the face, jaw, and neck are some of the most used muscles in the body. Because of constant use and a high propensity for stress to effect these muscles, most people experience tension, nerve-pinching, and even a buildup of toxins in these areas. However, with neuromuscular treatment, all of these problems are addressed and corrected by releasing tension and aligning the jaw.
“It doesn’t take a scientist to know that muscles are at optimal potential when they are relaxed and in their proper positions,” says Dr. Li on her Ottawa Implant Dentistry. “But, to get muscles in relaxed and proper position is often difficult as our bodies naturally form their own tension spots and misalignments. Part of neuromuscular treatment is to relax the muscles of the neck and face, which has a ripple effect on the muscles throughout the body.”
According to the Ottawa Invisalign and PPM practitioner, the body can easily become misaligned. In fact, misalignments in the hips, shoulders, and other areas of the body can be effected by neuromuscular problems in the jaw and neck.
According to PPM manufacturer Makkar Athletics Group, when athletes correct these misalignments, they experience an increase in strength, quickness, agility, and flexibility.

Method
PPM mouthguards are custom-molded to the unique jaw alignment of each patient notes Dr. Li. Finding the perfect jaw alignment that unlocks all of the performance benefits of the PPM technology starts with relaxing the muscles and nerves of the neck, jaw, and face that gradually lock into tense, inefficient alignments.
Relaxing these muscles and nerves is achieved through light electrical stimulation via a TENS machine. After the muscles and nerves are rendered relaxed, a measurement of the jaw’s alignment is taken. After, a custom PPM appliance is manufactured by the Makkar Athletics Group, who is responsible for inventing PPM technology. The newly created mouthguard is optimized for that specific athlete’s jaw, and opens up a world of improvements to performance.
There are three levels of PPM. The PPM Key is an entry level mouthguard, the PPM 1.0 is mid-level and the PPM Elite is targeted at more serious athletes who want the highest level performance.
PPM dentists such as Dr. Li receive special training in neuromuscular physiology and conducting special tests and measurements to yield optimal results.
Ottawa dentist Dr. Pamela Li aims to achieve greater orthodontic results for her pediatric and adult patients by bettering her knowledge of orthodontics through continuing education.

OTTAWA, ON — Ottawa cosmetic dentistry practitioner Dr. Pamela Li is taking a series of orthodontic courses for general dental practitioners. These courses enhance dentists’ knowledge of orthodontic treatment and further enable practitioners to diagnose and treat patients more effectively. Dr. Li is completing her training with Rondeau Seminars and at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI).

Dr. Li is one of several Ottawa dentists that seek additional training from Rondeau Seminars. She will complete her training in functional orthodontics at Rondeau Seminars in March 2010. This program prepares a dentist to provide early interceptive orthodontic treatment. It also provides intimate knowledge of removable and fixed functional appliances. This decreases the need for tooth extractions and surgery. The training also includes orthodontic treatment for TMJ disorders and facial pain.

“Functional orthodontics is practiced more commonly in Europe and is gaining popularity here in North America,” says Dr. Li. “Since 90% of the face is developed by age 12, it is important to start treatment early. If you wait until all the adult teeth erupt, it may be too late to correct some skeletal problems.”

At LVI, Dr. Li’s training focused on proper etiology, diagnosis and treatment. By determining the cause of the malocclusion first, the treatment will be much more successful. By eliminating the cause, such as poor airways, mouth breathing, or bad habits, there will be less chance of relapse.

“Functional orthodontics enhance my training in Invisalign,” says Dr. Li. “It also complements my work in sleep apnea and TMJ treatments. Jaw development and position is so important for healthy and balanced muscles, bones and joints. I also enjoy providing another cosmetic option for my patients.”

From her Ottawa dentistry practice, Dr. Li provides general, restorative, and cosmetic treatments in addition to orthodontics. She treats patients in need of crowns, bridges, cleanings, sealants, whitening, Invisalign orthodontics, dental implants, and other special services such as TMJ treatment and sports mouthguards.
With the help of a new ICAT machine in Ottawa, Ottawa dentist Dr. Pamela Li can more accurately plan implant and TMJ treatment.

OTTAWA, ON — Ottawa dentist Dr. Pamela Li will be utilizing a newly opened ICAT scanner to more accurately treat her patients in need of dental implants or TMJ care. The ICAT scanner allows dentists and surgeons to read 3D scans of a patient’s head and neck, with much less radiation exposure than CT scans.

Thanks to the ICAT, dental implant surgery is far easier and less risky. Using the 3D scans, surgeons can accurately determine the best site for a dental implant based on bone mass, jaw structure, and the arrangement of teeth and roots. It is easier to plan the restorations of multiple implants if the dentist knows exactly where the implants will be placed ahead of time. Because of this, the procedure and results are much more predictable.

“The new ICAT scanner is a great diagnostic tool for both my TMJ and implant patients,” said the Ottawa dental implants provider. “Optimal implant placement provides the best long term anchorage and alignment of the restorations. And my TMD patients benefit from an accurate evaluation of the health and position of the temporamandibular joint. This has been traditionally a difficult area to treat.”

Dr. Li’s TMD treatment incorporates non-invasive adjustments to the bite, achieving a natural and optimal alignment of the upper and lower jaw as well as the patient’s teeth. This can provide any number of results, including relief of jaw soreness, headaches, migraines, and other problems as well.

At her Ottawa dental care facility, Dr. Li also provides general dental treatments such as fillings, root canals, and cleanings. In addition to TMD and TMJ treatment, Dr. Li provides other special dental care such as snoring and sleep apnea treatment and Pure Power mouth guards. The Ottawa cosmetic dentist also provides crowns, veneers, bridges, denture, tooth whitening, and gum recontouring. She also provides orthodontic care such as Invisalign treatment.

Many Canadian adults and children suffer from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea increases the risk of heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke and diabetes. Snoring and sleep apnea can be treated with oral appliances.

Seasons Greetings!

This past year has gone by so quickly. My daughters are counting down the days until Christmas. These are the good years and my husband and I are enjoying every day with them.

I have continued taking courses in neuromuscular dentistry, TMJ (temporamandibular joint) disorders, treating headaches, migraines and facial pain. I have also completed courses in orthodontics, snoring and sleep apnea. They adhere to the same philosophy of trying to achieve the optimal jaw position.

Many Canadian adults and children suffer from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea increases the risk of heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke and diabetes. Snoring and sleep apnea can be treated with oral appliances. By wearing an appliance while sleeping, the jaw is held in a downward and forward position. This prevents the tongue from falling back and obstructing the throat and the airway. Dental appliances may be a good alternative to the CPAP machine, which forces air down the nose. Oral appliances are more comfortable than the CPAP machine. Our practice now has a Medibyte portable PSG (polysomnograph) machine available for patient use. Our Medibyte machine is similar to the ones used at hospital sleep clinics; but you can use it in the comfort of your own bed. This is an excellent screening tool to assess snoring and sleep apnea.

Early orthodontic treatment in children follows the same philosophy of optimizing the jaw position. It is important to encourage proper growth and development of jaws in the child. Proper jaw development is necessary to ensure healthy TMJs and good airways. By doing early interceptive orthodontics, many crowding and other orthodontic problems can be avoided or minimized.

I encourage you to visit my website, www.drpamelali.com. I have made changes and updates to it this fall. I welcome any comments about my website or my practice.

The office will be closed from Dec. 22, 2009 to Jan. 3, 2010 inclusive. I wish you and your family a safe, healthy and happy holiday.

Pamela Li
