How Invisalign Works

Ottawa ON — The Invisalign system consists of a series of clear aligners your orthodontist or dentist will have you switch every other week. Over time the aligners shift your teeth into position. Ottawa invisalign provider and cosmetic dentist Dr. Pamela Li explains, “Invisalign enjoys a 96% client satisfaction rate and has been used by more than 1 million patients.”

There are several stages in the Invisalign treatment. “When reviewing these steps you can see how important it is to find an experienced Invisalign dentist,” says Li, an Ottawa teeth cleaning provider. “It’s essential to find someone who has the training and experience with Invisalign to get everything just right.”

  • Your Invisalign provider will take impressions of your teeth and design a customized treatment plan for you.
  • When the impressions are digitized, your dentist can demonstrate the ways in which the aligners will move your teeth. He or she can show you before and after images – so you’ll know how your final smile will look.
  • A specialized lab will make approximately 18-30 aligners specifically for your teeth.
  • You will need to wear your aligners at least 22 hours a day, but you can take them off for brushing your teeth, eating or drinking. You will switch to a new aligner every two weeks.
  • You’ll visit the orthodontist approximately every six weeks. Each visit will show you how your new smile is developing – until you will have the smile you’re looking for.
  • Total treatment time averages 9-15 months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both will vary from case to case.

There are many advantages to Invisalign over traditional braces. The aligners are virtually invisible and are aesthetically pleasing. “They are also extremely comfortable, leading to minimal aching or tenderness,” says Dr. Li, an Ottawa dental clinic dentist. “Since the aligners are removed for eating and cleaning, you can brush and floss normally and eat anything you want.”
